Growing up I was handed down two really well-known idioms:
Don’t Rock the Boat
Sweep it Under the Rug
I bet you’re pretty familiar with these, right?
While there are good intentions behind these concepts, I struggled A LOT with them. I couldn’t understand why I shouldn’t just be honest and say what was on my mind. It felt weird and confusing.
I didn't want to hurt someone's feelings, but I couldn’t understand why I shouldn’t confront a situation and have a conversation with another party to move things forward with clarity.
Because of this I became an excellent writer. I wrote letters and cards to express my feelings and while it felt good to do this, I desperately wanted to speak up but I was petrified of potential conflict.
What if they yell at me?
What if they don’t like me?
What if they disagree with me?
